Fringe Fest 2015: Baker's Dozen: 12 Angry Puppets brings the big laughs

    1 of 1 2 of 1

I laughed out loud—a lot. The Butcher is on trial for murder in the death of the Baker, and Adam Francis Proulx uses a single puppet to represent twelve jurors —from a garrulous old man to a sassy, gum-snapping valley girl.

We watch Proulx transform the generic, muppet-style puppet into each character with accessories from his Jury Box, and with the virtuosity of his distinctive voices and gestures. Folded in with the wicked topical humour—references to Justin Bieber and Jian Ghomeshi—are thoughtful critiques of social media and the legal system: “You never know which selfie is going to be your missing person’s photo—hashtag murder!”

The show loses momentum once we’ve met all the jurors, but the surprises that keep coming up to that point make it well worth seeing.

      At Revue Stage on September 13 (noon), 16 (6:35 p.m.), 17 (8:30 p.m.), and 19 (8:15 p.m.).
