Winter Solstice Lantern Festival brightens up Vancouver

The Winter Solstice Lantern Festival has much more in store for participants than the glowing, bobbing lights it sends out to brighten up Saturday (December 21), the darkest night of the year. New on the multi-neighbourhood program is a candlelit Labyrinth of Light at Performance Works on Granville Island, one of the centres for the event; it’s now the procession’s second, the other being the Roundhouse Community Arts and Recreation Centre. Another addition is a big dance party at Astorino’s hall by Commercial Drive featuring soul-and-blues band High Society, Balkan brass artists Orkestar Slivovica, and Gypsy swingers Barefoot Bandits. The constellation spreads from these locations over to Yaletown and Chinatown, honouring a multitude of cultural traditions with lanterns, singing, drumming, music, and fire.
