Vancouver Art Gallery to begin letting children in for free on Sundays, starting in January

The Vancouver Art Gallery is set to become a little more kid—and parent—friendly.

It's just announced that, starting January 5, all children under 12 will get free admission on Sundays. That also means free access to the gallery's educational programs and workshops for kids on those days.

The initiative is being made possible by support from its "Visionary Partner", the Diamond Foundation.

Established by Gordon and Leslie Diamond in 1985, the Diamond Foundation is a family charitable organization. The new free-admission program is the latest part of a multiyear initiative supported by the fFoundation to provide subsidized community access to the VAG for B.C. residents.

Regular adult admission to the gallery is $17, with children five and over costing $6 to enter; a family gets in for $50. Children under five get in free.

Great way to introduce kids to art. In Paris, people under 18 are admitted to museums free, and those under 25 get in for free with a valid student ID card. In London, entrance to museums is free (although donations are appreciated) - this includes the National Gallery, British Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum, and others. Getting kids into the museums, letting them experience art first-hand, can expand their horizons in amazing ways. And if their parents buy memberships, they pay for themselves within about 2.5 visits. (No, I don't work for the VAG, but I do have a membership.)

This is incredibly generous of the VAG. Why haven't they considered doing this before?

Does this mean more "childrens" programming in order to meet the needs of a new constitutency?

Well, art galleries are the best place to enlarge your kids artistic skills by showing them different art work. In art galleries they can see various paintings with multiple color combination and shades which helps to know more about art.
