The Vancouver Opera has announced it is changing the composer for its newly commissioned Stickboy.

Neil Weisensel will replace Jordan Nobles to create the music set to the libretto by spoken-word star Shane Koyczan.

The VO said Nobles had to leave the project for personal reasons.

The Winnipeg-based Weisensel has penned such operas as Gisela in her Bathtub, City Workers in Love, The Bachelor Farmers of the Apocalypse, Merry Christmas Stephen Leacock, The Master’s Stroke and Secret Service—four with librettist/director Michael Cavanagh, a familiar name in VO productions.

Stickboy is scheduled to premiere in October and November 2014 at the Vancouver Playhouse. It will be part of Vancouver Opera's 2014-2015 subscription season.

I know that I am not the only subscriber who already questioned this misguided project when it was announced. With performances scheduled less than a year away shouldn't music have been written and workshopped by now? Or are subscribers really being asked to finance what will in effect be the first workshop? I only pay about $80 a ticket, I can't imagine that those paying a lot more for the better seats will be any less pleased.

Stickboy? Don't all boys have sticks? Oh and its about bullying. Been there, had that done to me. Sounds familiar. Nothing new under this sun.

Oh go blow against a wall Hazlit. Bullying is absolutely a relevant and ever-changing issue. Today it's something of an epidemic, what with the separation of accountability from interaction in social media.
I could go on, but why waste time with negativity?
