There are two chances this week to bask in the beauty of Gerald Finley’s baritone. The Canadian singer has made a name for big opera roles, and you can check out one of them at the Vancity Theatre on Sunday and next Wednesday (January 26 and 29) when it screens Parsifal. Finley brings his resonant voice to Richard Wagner’s first opera, staged by Britain’s esteemed Royal Opera House; he’s scheduled to speak before the first show. The real treat, though, is hearing Finley, later that Sunday night at the Playhouse, in the other form he’s so well known for: recital singing and concerts. The Vancouver Recital Society presents him and pianist Julius Drake in a performance of Franz Schubert’s haunting song cycle Winterreise—ideal, sombre material to show off Finley’s expressive shading. The Guardian called a recent concert of the cycle by the same duo “truly harrowing”.
