The voices of female artists from almost a thousand years ago are seldom heard. The great exception is Benedictine visionary and composer Hildegard von Bingen, who lived from 1098 to 1179. For the world premiere of its new program Mystical Voices of Mediæval Germany, at Holy Rosary Cathedral on Wednesday (January 22), the Paris-based Sequentia Ensemble for Mediæval Music, featuring director Benjamin Bagby (above) and Norbert Rodenkirchen on flutes and harp, presents a selection of works, including masterpieces by von Bingen performed by the seven-member Sequentia Women’s Vocal Ensemble. The evening, presented by Early Music Vancouver, promises a rare opportunity for long-distance time travelling.
