Strong theatre and bold, original voices abound at this year’s Talking Stick Festival, which serves up more than 50 shows between now and March 2.

Fest founder and veteran actor Margo Kane herself stars in Michel Tremblay’s For the Pleasure of Seeing Her Again, which runs Friday (February 21) to February 28 at the York Theatre. Kevin Loring plays the narrator talking about his unstoppable mother (Kane) in Tremblay’s hilarious homage.

Elsewhere, Native Earth Performing Arts’ acclaimed production of Tara Beagan’s In Spirit (formerly called Quilchena) takes place at the Roundhouse Community Arts and Recreation Centre on Wednesday and Thursday (February 19 and 20). It’s based on the true story of Monica Jack, a 12-year-old who went missing one afternoon when she went out to ride her new bike near Nicola Lake, B.C., in 1978.

And Axis Theatre cleverly mashes together two of the West Coast’s most emblematic cultures in Raven Meets the Monkey King, a family-friendly show that runs from Wednesday (February 19) to February 28 at the Cultch’s Vancity Culture Lab. It’s about an 11-year-old who finds a First Nations Raven mask wrapped in a Chinese-opera poster depicting the Monkey King, and lets loose both characters.
