Hallucinatory homages to The Rite of Spring, premieres by some of the hottest European choreographers of the moment, and the first local appearance by the Miami City Ballet are highlights of the 2014-15 season announced by Ballet B.C. last night at the opening for its mixed program Grace Symmetry.

The season continues artistic director Emily Molnar's vision to push the company in cutting-edge contemporary directions, opening in November with No. 29, a triple bill featuring a world premiere by fast-rising Spanish choreographer Fernando Hernando Magadan; the local premiere of An Instant by Vancouver-born choreographer Lesley Telford; and a remount of Jacopo Godani’s A.U.R.A.

In March, the Trace program features the Canadian premiere of workwithinwork by the  renowned choreographer William Forsythe; a world premiere by Italy's Walter Matteini; and the reprisal of French choreographer Medhi Walerski’s Petite Cérémonie.

In May, the troupe presents Rite, an interdisciplinary double bill featuring world premieres inspired by The Rite of Spring. First, Emily Molnar collaborates with both globally celebrated Vancouver designer and Bocci creative director Omer Arbel and Black Mountain band member Jeremy Schmidt. The show is supposed to be a heady exploration of the original music and the way it taps into the unconscious. Next, Spanish choreographer Gustavo Ramirez Sansano will reimagine The Rite of Spring for the full company to the complete orchestral score of Stravinsky’s still-new-sounding score. Ballet B.C. is the first company in Canada to commission his work.

For the holidays in December 2014, Ballet B.C. presents the Royal Winnipeg Ballet's uniquely Canadian retelling of The Nutcracker.

And in February 2015, it brings Miami City Ballet to Vancouver for the first time in Balanchine, an evening of masterworks by George Balanchine. The three works on its program are the seminal Serenade, the bold Symphony in Three Movements set to Stravinsky, and Ballo della Regina to set to Verdi’s ballet music from Don Carlos.

Season ticket renewals will be mailed in early March 2014. Single tickets go on sale on August 1.
