Dances for a Small Stage continues to expand its programming, stepping out of the performance hall and into local community centres this spring.

Community Stages, which runs from now through the end of May, pairs local professional dancers and musicians to create new work across the city, with regular public displays and dialogues about their creative process. Dances for a Small Stage puts on twice-yearly shows at the Ukrainian Centre and recently launched a more intimate "point 5" series at the Emerald.

“MovEnt’s signature series - Dances for a Small Stage - has always been about two things: creating a platform for artists to create, while introducing new audiences to the art form of dance,” MovEnt artistic producer Julie-anne Saroyan explained in a press statement. “Community Stages realizes these goals beautifully. Bringing dance out of traditional performance venues and into public, social spaces will create opportunities for both artist and audiences to make new discoveries in dance.”

For the new project, at Trout Lake Community Centre, dancer, choreographer and percussionist Dayna Szyndrowski collaborates with Jessica Wilkie and harpist Elisa Thorn, with public showings Thursdays from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.

At Renfrew Community Centre, dancer and choreographer Erika Mitsuhashi joins forces with guitarist/vocalist Damon Schwabach-Morris, showing Wednesdays from 3 to 4 p.m. and Fridays from 4 to 5 p.m.

At Hillcrest Community Centre, dancer-choreographer Lina Fitzner presents with singer-songwriter Corbin Murdoch on Mondays from noon to 1 p.m. and Thursdays from 3 to 4 p.m.

At Coal Harbour Community Centre, dancer-choreographer Julie Chapple, dancer Lexi Vajda, and percussionist Ben Brown show their work on Wednesdays and Fridays 11:30 a.m. to 1p.m.

And at the False Creek Community Centre, dancer-choreographer Arash Khakpour mixes it up with saxophonist Dominic Conway, while dancer-choreographer Sophia Wolfe works with bassist Colin Cowan, with times to be announced.

The five creation processes will culminate in a final performance of all the works at Moberly Arts and Culture Theatre (7647 Prince Albert St.) on May 24 at 7pm and May 25 at 2pm. Admission is by donation.
