Hot Ticket: Mulan—The Musical is a female, percussion-powered folk tale

It’s an epic stage production that combines a famous Chinese folk tale with some powerful beats.

On its first visit to Canada, China’s Red Poppy Ladies Percussion Group presents its version of the story, in which a peasant girl disguises herself as a man so she can become a soldier to fight the invading Huns.

The spectacle mixes kung fu, dance, and pounding drum work—all fantastically female-powered, with elaborate costumes. The production has travelled to Broadway and beyond to dozens of countries before coming here, and makes a perfect cultural, visual, and aural feast for Lunar New Year.

Mulan—The Musical takes place this Saturday (February 6) at the Hard Rock Casino Vancouver (2080 United Boulevard, Coquitlam).

Tickets to the show can be purchased online.
