B.C. leads the way when it comes to both volunteering for and donating to arts and culture.

A new report from Hill Strategies Research, five percent of British Columbians (about 186,000 of us) contribute time to the cause, versus the national average of three percent.

Hill's findings were based on analysis of Canada’s 2013 General Social Survey on Giving, Volunteering, and Participating.

Other key findings include the fact that 900,000 Canadians volunteered for the equivalent of 56,000 jobs in arts and culture organizations in 2013. And the 107 million hours contributed to arts and culture organizations represent an average of 120 hours per volunteer--interestingly, more hours, on average, than volunteers in any other type of organization.

Donations to arts organizations was also highest in the West. The donor rate in 2013 in British Columbia  was four percent (or 170,000), higher than the national average of three percent.
