Felix Mendelssohn looked back to his baroque predecessors when he wrote his Elijah oratorio, and it’s still a favourite of choirs today. On Thursday night (March 15) at the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts, more than 150 singers and instrumentalists from the Langley Fine Arts School will bring the melodramatic work to life under the direction of guest conductor Dale Lonis, former conductor of the Israel Wind Symphony and the Winnipeg Wind Ensemble.

Elsewhere on the program: John Mackey’s Xerxes and Jean Sibelius’s Violin Concerto. It’s a testament to the level of the school that they’re taking any of these on—and a chance to check out the classical stars of tomorrow.
