Old Johannes Sebastian isn’t the only early-music great getting a makeover in the Erato Ensemble’s upcoming show: John Dowland, Henry Purcell, Claudio Monteverdi, and George Frederick Handel also contribute preludes, arias, and laments to the event, which will be reimagined by some of B.C.’s best young composers.

What makes AYRE: Early Music Remixed different from the usual postmodern mashup, however, is that the historical pieces will also be presented in their pristine, original form, making it easier to hear how they’ve been transformed for the 21st century.

A bonus is that Erato’s all-star cast will be performing at St. Andrew’s–Wesley United Church, an acoustically vibrant space that will make this Saturday (May 24) show all the more enjoyable.
