It’s a happy 120th birthday for the Museum of Vancouver. In honour of the museum’s 12-decades-long existence, admission will be only $1.20 (free for members) during its opening hours, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., this Thursday (May 29).

The anniversary is not only important for the museum, but for Vancouver’s history as well.

“In Canadian terms, we are an old museum with an old collection,” Nancy Noble, MOV CEO, said in a news release. “For 120 years this museum has been the repository of the material culture and collective memory of this city. We are a reflection of Vancouver’s identity over time. That is valuable in and of itself.”

The museum was originally founded in 1894 as Vancouver’s Art, Historical and Scientific Association. Soon afterwards, the City Museum was created at Main and Hastings.

The current facility in Vanier Park was constructed in 1968. The museum was renamed the Centennial Museum and later the Vancouver Museum. In 2009, the museum was renamed the Museum of Vancouver after a visioning process that engaged the community about contemporary Vancouver issues.

The milestone will be recognized by B.C. Place, which will illuminate its Northern Lights roof with the museum’s colours from sunset until 11 p.m. Also, for each of the next 120 days, the museum will share a photo on social media at 1:20 p.m. for each year of accessions.
