Allow the Vancouver Society for Early Music to transport you back in time through the songs of centuries past this summer at the Vancouver Early Music Festival. The festival has just announced its lineup, which includes concerts by Sequentia and Les Voix Baroques, a presentation of Handel’s Il Trionfo del Tempo, and the premiere of their new Mentorship Orchestra Project, and more.

The festival’s theme this year is “The Hand of Time”, which explores musical representations of the different times of the day, how we measure and keep time in music, and the idea of ephemeral beauty in our lives.

The festival kicks off on July 25 at 8 p.m. with a performance by internationally lauded keyboardist Colin Tilney, who will perform pieces in celebration of his 80th year of life.

Sequentia, a medieval-music ensemble, performs on August 1 at 8 p.m. These innovative artists will be tracing ancient Germanic and Norse texts through song, exploring the apocalyptic images of the end of time.

Handel’s Il Trionfo del Tempo will be directed by Alexander Weimann and performed by Amanda Forsythe, Krisztina Szabó, Reginald L. Mobley, and Colin Balzer on August 7 at 7:30 p.m. The centerpiece of this festival, Il Trionfo del Tempo marks the third installment in the Early Music Festival’s Handel series.

Also performing will be soprano Ellen Hargis and mezzo Sylvia Szadovszki on July 27 at 8 p.m., Lucas Harris and Weimann on July 29 at 8 p.m., and the Early Music Vancouver Mentorship Orchestra on August 3 at 8 p.m.

Tickets are available online or by phone at 604-732-1610.
