On Monday (June 9), Vancouver park commissioners will vote on encouraging more artistic activities in local green space near the Downtown Eastside.

Park board general manager Malcolm Bromley has written a report recommending that commissioners approve a new arts-focused learning garden in Trillium North Park.

Bromley has also recommended that staff negotiate a five-year licence agreement with EartHand Gleaners Society to run an organic community garden in the park.

According to the report, the society would promote environmental education "by fostering hand-based skill development through the creative arts".

It would involve schools, youth groups, and residents who don't have an assigned gardening plot.

The northern section of Trillium Park is expected to open this summer. The southern portion, which is at 600 National Avenue at the intersection of Thornton Street, is a popular area for soccer and field-hockey players.

In addition to its two sport fields, the three-hectare site will also have an amphitheatre, storage area for artists, and exhibit and programming space.

In 2012, Vision Vancouver park commissioner Aaron Jasper told the Straight that he would like to see Trillium North Park named after former Vision Vancouver councillor Jim Green.

"It's close to the Downtown Eastside where Jim spent his time as an activist, and the Strathcona area," Jasper said at the time. "So I personally think that—whether or not we rename the entire park or some form of commemoration—Jim’s definitely worthy of more than just a plaque in a plaza.”
