Langara College’s renowned theatre training program Studio 58 has announced its 49th season, and they are ramping up their act in preparation for their half-century milestone next year. The upcoming year features instantly recognizable works of theatre such as the classic musical Oklahoma! as well as more local creations, such as Elbow Room Café: the Musical.

The season will kick off with the world premiere of the play Kosmic Mambo, which will run from October 2 to 19. This piece, based loosely upon the Rime of the Ancient Mariner by Samuel Taylor Coleridge, tells the fictional story of the USSR’s failed attempt to send six cosmonauts to Mars in response to America’s moon landing.

From November 13 to 30, the students will perform the classic story One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, based on the novel by Ken Kesey. The story’s protagonist, popularized by Jack Nicholson in the feature film, chooses to spend his punishment in a mental institution instead of prison, but decides to revolt against his caretakers when he realizes that instead of helping the patients, the nurses are passive-aggressively controlling them.

Switching genres, Studio 58 will continue its season with Oklahoma! from February 5 to March 1, 2015. The play was a milestone in American musical theatre, and will be reliving the themes of hope and prosperity and living the dream as it comes to the stage in Vancouver.

Finally, the season draws to a close with a Vancouver-centred production, Elbow Room Café: the Musical. This production delves deep into the lives of partners in life and business Patrice and Bryan as they run one of Vancouver’s most interesting, recognizable restaurants. The piece will be a platform for experimentation, with new acts every night from March 9 to 29, 2015.

Additionally, the season will include the Risky Nights Series, which is designed as a bridge between productions and classroom work. Students have the opportunity to create an original theatre piece from scratch, start to finish and perform it for an audience. The first of these performances will take place from November 24 to 30, and the second from February 16 to 22, 2015.

Tickets will be available beginning June 20. More information is available at www.studio58.ca.

What no Shakespeare; no classic drama--just warmed over pablum rewrites, mental patients with bad attitudes, and morons in cowboy hats? Count me out.
