Gamelan Alligator Joy at the Western Front

The Javanese instruments played by Gamelan Alligator Joy, the chamber offshoot of the larger Gamelan Madu Sari, are made to an old design, but the music played on them is pretty much brand new.

Branching Out, Branching In, the program the nonet presents at the Western Front on Friday (June 20), focuses on new works by an array of local composers, including Andreas Kahre, John Oliver, and Michael O’Neill.

The sounds range from gorgeously dreamy to agitated and driving, making the show a must-see for any lover of the percussive arts.
