Companies from France, Switzerland, Belgium, and even the Congo headline the just-announced Dance Centre's aptly named Global Dance Connections series for 2014-15.

Among the biggest names is France's Ballet Preljocaj, which presents celebrated choreographer Angelin Preljocaj’s Empty moves, set to the 1977 recording of minimalist composer John Cage’s abstracted text in Empty words. The show kicks off the season on September 25 and 26.

Next up is Swiss troupe Compagnie Gilles Jobin, with Quantum, from October 16 and 18--the largest particle physics laboratory in the world. It's Illuminated by Julius von Bismarck’s light-activated kinetic installation built from industrial lamps.

In the new year, January 22 to 24, 2015, the centre copresents Belgium's Lisbeth Gruwez, whose solo is set to the crescendoing speech-making of American televangelist Jimmy Swaggert. It's called It’s going to get worse and worse and worse, my friend.

From the Democratic Republic of Congo, Faustin Linyekula and Studios Kabako hit town January 29 to 31, with his raw, autobiographical Le Cargo--a mix of song, storytelling, dance, and the dark imagery of his homeland.

Two local troupes round out the season, with MACHiNENOiSY debuting Time Machine, which integrates adults and children, from February 4 to 7, and Les Productions Figlio unveiling Monsieur Auburtin, Serge Bennathan’s new autobiographical look at a life of dance, March 26 to 28.

Elsewhere at the centre, the Discover Dance! noon series will feature everyone from Jacky Essombe to the 605 Collective. The latter troupe is also working with Justine A. Chambers to create a series of site-specific dance happenings and installations behind the doors of Scotiabank Dance Centre’s 1930 Art Deco frontage on Granville Street.
