The Vancouver Art Gallery has elected three new members to its board of trustees: Hank Bull, Tom Milroy, and Pamela Richardson.

The three new members come from diverse backgrounds and will join the 21 other members in their duties.

Bull is a senior multimedia artist, long-time force at the Western Front, and the founder of Centre A, the Vancouver International Centre for Contemporary Asian Art. He established collections and ran the centre until 2010, when he stepped down to focus on other projects. Since then, Bull has been awarded an honorary doctorate from Emily Carr University.

Vancouver native Milroy is the CEO of BMO Executive Markets, and has previously worked in investment banking in New York. Milroy lives in Toronto with his wife, and is also on the board of the Canadian Association of Mental Health and the Pacific Parkinson’s Research Institute.

Richardson is active in a variety of arts-related philanthropic endeavours. She worked in the fashion and media industries throughout her career, and in 2006, wrote a book called A Kidnapped Mind, dealing with her experience with Parental Alienation Syndrome.

The appointment of three new board members comes at a time when the Vancouver Art Gallery is in the midst of a planned move to a new building downtown from its current location at Robson Square.

Can anyone speak to the diversity on the VAG Board of Trustees? Does its membership reflect the community? Or are wealthy, white folks overrepresented?

I hope they brought their own money to pay for the new art gallery so the general public won't get robbed so they can build a building that might attract 50,000 people or so a year. Art is for the upper crust snob class.

I couldn't disagree more. The aim of art is to educate a benighted public. You have a civic duty to support it with your taxes, at the same time, the gallery leaders have a public responsibility to providing you with a broad and deep cultural education.

The resentment of the culturally sophisticated--calling us "snobs" in a derogatory fashion--merely leads to a society run by blathering idiots.
