Ode to I, Braineater at the Khatsahlano Street Party

Out of Vancouver’s punk-rock hothouse of the late 1970s emerged Jim Cummins, one of the city’s most enduring—and colourful—figures in the underground and low-brow art worlds. A prolific maker of performance art, painting, photography, film, and music, the man known best as I, Braineater headlines the arts programming at this Saturday’s (July 12) Khatsahlano Street Party between Trafalgar and Stephens streets on West 4th Avenue. It’s a chance to immerse yourself in his bizarro world of flame-shooting hot rods, razor-toothed monsters (see Icky Sticky Goes to Town, above), and the notorious Blockhead character. In other words, get set to get nostalgic for the old days at the Montgomery Café. The retrospective, called Planet X: The Underground World of Jim Cummins and I, Braineater, features an exhibition of work from his almost 40-year career, including paintings, silkscreened gig posters, and early punk-scene photography. It gets better: there’ll be two performances, one with long-time collaborator Phil Western, and another where Cummins will be backed up by—wait for it—a band of cartoon monsters.
