More than 100 artists from around the world have converged at the Vancouver Convention Centre East (999 Canada Place), where the first art fair of its kind is celebrating its second annual event.

Art! Vancouver, originally created by West Vancouver-based curator Lisa Wolfin, takes place this weekend (May 27 to 29). We spoke with Wolfin earlier today to find out just how much work goes into putting on a show of this size.

"There was no art fair in Vancouver. There's art fairs all over the world, and they can attract anywhere from 70,000 to 90,000 people to the city to see the art, so that was the motivation; to put Vancouver on the map as an art destination," she said.

She mentioned a few notable international artists, including Efraim Mashiah, Elena Bulatova, and Paul Ygartua, but she also emphasized that the fair includes a mix of emerging artists, too--some who are showing their work for the first time.

"We're already putting the show together [for 2017], which is funny, because some people think, 'oh, it's just a weekend', but it takes the whole year, because there are so many aspects to it," Wolfin said. "To get people from around the world in the show, you have to really get out there."
