Many arts organizations have just received a financial boost from the City of Vancouver.

Council today approved $464,650 in community arts grants to 82 organizations. The politicians accepted a staff recommendation to reject 20 additional requests for grants, as the number of applications was a city record, jumping by almost 12 percent from 2015.

The Diwali Celebration Society and the Car Free Vancouver Society led the list with $15,000.

Some other notable groups receiving large sums were the Asian-Canadian Special Events Association, the Burrard Arts Foundation, and the Vancouver International Bhangra Celebration Society. Most of the groups that applied did so with one large event in mind, and with the three above, the events were, respectively, TAIWANfest, Façade Festival, and the City of Bhangra Festival.

Among the 20 rejected applicants were the Georgia Strait Alliance (no relation to the paper), the Vancouver Anime Convention Society, and the Vancouver Seniors’ Singing Club Association.

      The vote passed unanimously.
