The Vancouver Symphony Society’s president and CEO will be leaving the city early next year to lead the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

Jeff Alexander will be the new president of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association effective January 12, 2015, according to an announcement today (September 3) from Jay Henderson, the chairman of the CSOA’s board of trustees.

The Chicago Symphony Orchestra has 106 members, and was founded in 1891. As president, Alexander will work with the orchestra’s musical director Riccardo Muti.

“I am extremely honored to have been selected to serve as the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association’s next President,” Alexander said in a news release.

“As has the rest of the world, I have for many decades greatly admired and been inspired by Maestro Muti and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. I look forward to working with them, the Association’s Board of Trustees, the administration and volunteers on achieving the long-term aspirations of the organization.”

Alexander has acted as head of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra for 14 years, working alongside music director Bramwell Tovey.

"I am privileged to have been able to enjoy well over 1,500 VSO concerts in forty venues around the world, and delighted the organization is in such a strong position and poised for even greater success in the future as it approaches its 100th anniversary," Alexander stated.

Before he joined the VSO, Alexander spent 16 years with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra.

Jeff Alexander is one of the most gifted arts leaders and managers in our nation.

We first worked with Jeff when planning for the very first release in our new 'Canadian Classics' series on Naxos. Through Jeff, Bramwell and their team, we were able to release Jeff Ryan's 'Fugitive Colours' in that series. It has been very well-received, and the Vancouver Symphony sounds brilliant on it.

None of this would have happened without Jeff's skill, leadership, diplomacy and daring -- traits he has brought to every endeavour in his last 14 years here.

Chicago has no idea how lucky they are to get him.
