Fringe Fest 2014: Ludwig and Lohengrin wades into shallow Bavarian waters

    1 of 1 2 of 1

Playwright and solo performer Kyle Rakoz wades into the life of “Mad” King Ludwig II of Bavaria—the guy who built the castle Walt Disney copied—and doesn’t even get ankle deep. Court intrigue, Ludwig’s homosexuality, his relationship to Richard Wagner: they all get the same superficial treatment. Rakoz’s dialogue is deliberately contemporary. It’s also unsophisticated. When Ludwig first contacts Wagner, the composer exclaims, “My God! Royal patronage? I’m in ecstasy! This is the break I’ve been waiting for my whole life.” Rakoz plays several characters and overacts almost all of them. The artist’s staging is the best thing about the show: he uses a bed sheet and flashlight inventively. But there’s no insight.

      At the Revue Stage on September 6 (10:15 p.m.), 7 (2 p.m.), 9 (9:30 p.m.), 12 (5 p.m.) and 13 (3:30 p.m.)
