Butt Kapinski at the Cultch’s Vancity Culture Lab

In her solo show, Butt Kapinski, L.A. clown Deanna Fleysher becomes a private detective who’s a bit like Philip Marlowe—but more baffled and with a speech impediment. To set the mood for this film-noir fantasy, Butt carries a desk lamp on his back. And, to create everything else, he uses the audience.

This is a participatory show like you’ve never seen. When the Straight caught Butt Kapinski at the 2012 Vancouver Fringe Festival, audience members were having such a good time that they were hurling themselves into the event, playing characters—including prostitutes; the show careens into the sexual—creating sound effects, and even improvising the score.

If you need more convincing, Butt Kapinski comes trailing awards, including Best of Festival prizes at the Edmonton, Calgary, and Hollywood Fringe Festivals. Bonus: it also won Most Orgasmic Production at the Hollywood Fringe.

Watch your Butt at the Cultch’s Vancity Culture Lab until October 11.
