West Side Story at the Vancouver Playhouse

Here’s an exciting combination: tap with flamenco, all intertwined with one of the best-loved dance musicals of the 20th century. Karen Flamenco has teamed up with Troy McLaughlin Dance Works for an ambitious production of West Side Story, and at last check—no surprise—it was almost sold out. The way choreographer Karen Pitkethly and McLaughlin have staged the story of 1950s New York, the rival gangs take on different dance forms, with the Jets performing tap and the Sharks performing flamenco. Just wait till Tony and Maria get together with their fiery footwork. Yes, you should be able to follow the sounds of pummelling feet, not to mention a few “Olé!”s, all the way to the Vancouver Playhouse for the shows Friday and Saturday (November 28 and 29). We promise you’ve never heard, or seen, anything like it.
