Tracey Power’s Chelsea Hotel—The Songs of Leonard Cohen is the real thing: a genuine Vancouver hit. The Firehall Arts Centre debuted Chelsea Hotel in 2012, remounted it last spring, sent it on a national tour, and is bringing it back home for another run from Saturday (December 13) to January 4. What makes this show so good? Well, Leonard Cohen’s songs, for one thing: “Take This Waltz”, “Suzanne”, “Bird on a Wire”. And, if you think you know these tunes, think again; musical director Steven Charles reinvents and refreshes them, speeding some of them up, giving others a carnival spin. The cast is spectacular: they all play a variety of musical instruments as well as sing. And, thanks to Marshal McMahen’s paper-inspired set and Barbara Clayden’s paperlike costumes, this theatrical evening of music looks fantastic. But it’s Power’s vision that makes the whole thing so unique—and unforgettable. Check into—and check out—the Chelsea Hotel.
