Vancouver’s Firehall Arts Centre, Mitch and Murray Productions, Pacific Theatre, and shameless hussy productions have been awarded the 2016 International Centre for Women Playwrights 50/50 Applause Award.

The international prize honours theatres that have produced 50 percent or more female playwrights in the past year.

Of the nine shows presented by the Firehall Arts Centre for the 2015–16 season, five were conceieved by women: Love Bomb, The Out Vigil, Social Studies, Little One, and Chelsea Hotel: The Complete Songs of Leonard Cohen.

Mitch & Murray’s singular show for the year, Rapture, Blister, Burn, was produced by Gina Gionfriddo, while the Pacific Theatre’s The Amish Project, Common Grace, and Wit were each produced by women.

Playwright Megan Gardiner helmed both of shameless hussy productions’ 2015–16 shows: Dissolve and the aforementioned Love Bomb, which played at the Firehall Arts Centre last fall.

The playhouses join 103 other theatres across the world in this year’s honours, including those located as far as Australia, Kenya, the Philippines, and Switzerland.
