Seven local artists have been granted inexpensive or free studio or live-work accommodation by Vancouver city council.

As part of the Artist Studio Awards program, the city makes this space available over council's term, which has been extended to four years by the provincial government.

Long-form documentary maker Fiona Rayher receives the only rent-free live-work studio, which is at 272 East 4th Avenue. She's a founder of Gen Why Media.

The only free work-only studio at 1571 West 6th Avenue goes to Soran Mardookhi, a Vancouver-based film and video maker of Kurdish descent. His feature-length film Turbulence was screened at the 2014 Vancouver International Film Festival.

Painter Matthew Brown has also been awarded a work-only studio at 1573 West 6th Avenue, which will cost $300 per month.

Live-work studios costing $375 per month have been awarded to wood carver, sculptor, and painter Carol A. Young (8031 Nunavut Lane) and artist Osvaldo Ramirez Castillo (485 West 8th Avenue).

Textile-based painter Colleen Heslin receives a live-work studio at 1202 East Pender for $440 per month.

The final live-work studio goes to the founder of MACHiNENOiSY Dance Society, Daelik (Darin) Hackenbrook. He will pay $470 per month for space at 8031 Nunavut Lane.

An independent jury granted the awards after applicants were pre-qualified based on need and a Vancouver residency by the city's cultural services department.

These spaces were created through community-amenity contributions from developers, which were included as part of rezoning approvals.
