What's in a name? It's a question that has been floating around the Twittersphere, along with the hashtag #RenameBC, for the last few weeks.

It was in 1858 that this province, then a colony, was first referred to as British Columbia. Under strict instruction from the British colonial office, Lieutenant Governor of the Colony of B.C. Richard Clement Moody was told to "found a second England on the shores of the Pacific."

Given B.C.'s prior history, and a lack of established treaties with First Nations who called the area home long before it was colonized, some are wondering whether the name "British Columbia" still holds up.

Artist Lawrence Paul Yuxweluptun, whose work is currently being exhibited at the Museum of Anthropology, is suggesting that it's time B.C. gets a new name.

"The naming of British Columbia has long been a question for aboriginal people," he said in a recent interview at his East Van studio. "This is why I'm asking for the change, because Canada doesn't own this province. We've never surrendered it."

Watch visitors to the exhibit answer the question, and hear one of Yuxweluptun's ideas for a new name in the video below. Submit your ideas at renamebc.ca.
