Pianist Emanuel Ax at the Chan Centre

Grammy-winning American pianist Emanuel Ax has spent the past year playing with long-time collaborator Yo-Yo Ma and digging deep into the repertoire of Brahms on stages around the world.

But the more intimate concert he’ll perform here with the Vancouver Recital Society, at the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts on Sunday (January 18), is just as enticing as those big deals.

In it, the modest but masterful musician takes on a transcendent program of French composers like Claude Debussy and Georges Bizet, with a little Frédéric Chopin thrown in. It’s a chance to hear these glimmering pieces played with an intelligence and sensitivity you’ve never experienced before.

Close your eyes and picture yourself in romantic, late-19th-century Paris instead of drizzly Vancouver.
