Vancouver artist Alex MacKenzie blends film and performance

Alex MacKenzie calls it “expanded cinematic performance”; you could also think of it as film in stereo. The veteran Vancouver film artist wields not just dual projectors, but colour gels, masking, lens interference, and physical movement in his new piece, Apparitions.

MacKenzie, the brilliant force behind the late, great Blinding Light!! Cinema, works mostly with 16mm analogue film equipment (remember what that is in this digital age?) and hand-processed imagery. Expect a dreamlike montage that will push you to think of film in new ways.

The screening takes place at the Western Front on Thursday (February 16) at 7 p.m.
