Mongolian troupe Anda Union at the Chan Centre

As a visual spectacle alone, Anda Union is likely to be worth the price of admission to its Sunday (March 26) concert at the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts; colourful silk robes from the Silk Road and elaborately carved horse-head fiddles are a big part of the Mongolian troupe’s appeal.

Splendid as those might be, however, it’s the band’s sound that will captivate. Reflecting the shamanistic belief that all life is one, the nine-member group’s singers will capture the essence of wind and running water in several different throat-singing styles, while the aforementioned fiddles will contribute neighing sound effects and the pounding rhythms of galloping hooves, as well as sturdy folk melodies.

It’s not easy to get to Mongolia, but a taste of the landlocked country’s culture can be had by simply driving to Point Grey. Just don’t blame us if, after the show, you contemplate trading the condo for a life of yurts and yaks.
