Amy Mukai’s abstract paintings on paper, worked and reworked over a number of years (and even decades), read as metaphysical investigations. Deeply painterly, they’re also visual meditations on the problem of reality. Her engaging forms are usually variations on the geometric, and her palette is frequently subdued, with grays muting what might otherwise be strident blues, reds, and yellows. Viewing these subtle works in the show called The Alchemy of Practice is transfixing—even transforming, at Trench Contemporary Art to December 22.
