Athol Fugard’s Playland at the Pacific Theatre
Set in a travelling amusement park, Athol Fugard’s Playland (Friday [November 5] to November 27 at the Pacific Theatre) is the kind of ride that promises to leave you shaken to your core. The action takes place in South Africa on New Year’s Eve in 1989, only weeks before Nelson Mandela’s release from prison. A black security guard and a white soldier grapple with their country’s history, their personal journeys, and each other. “Forgive me or kill me. That’s the only choice you’ve got,” are the words uttered by the soldier, encapsulating the tenor of a country on the cusp of transformation.
