Class Reunion at the Contemporary Art Gallery
Walking through Nairy Baghramian’s 18-piece sculpture called Class Reunion, at the Contemporary Art Gallery, you start feeling like the abstract, minimalist forms are becoming a cast of bizarre characters. It’s not just in the seeming gesture and posture of the shapes standing at attention around you; it’s their names, like “The Slacker”, “The Dandy”, and “Please, After You”. So Baghramian, who was born in Iran but now lives and works in Berlin, manages to comment on everything from modernism and surrealism to social and political relationships. It’s her first exhibition in North America, on display till November 11.
