Clybourne Park at the Stanley Theatre

The Arts Club’s Stanley Industrial Alliance Theatre kicks off its season with a play that not only nabbed an Olivier Award in London but also Tony awards and a Pulitzer Prize back home in America. Issues of race and integration, it seems, know no borders. Bruce Norris’s script tells the story of an African-American family that moves into a Chicago house in 1959 to the horror of its white neighbours; then it jumps forward 50 years, when two white newlyweds try to buy the same place in the predominantly black neighbourhood. The New York Times calls Clybourne Park a “strong, ferociously funny” play that will be relevant—unfortunately—for many, many years to come. We suggest you leave politically correct hangups at the door when it opens officially on Wednesday (September 12). Respected director Janet Wright helms the production.
