Jerry Wasserman, professor and head of UBC’s Department of Theatre and Film, is to receive the 2011 Sam Payne Award next Friday (April 27), alongside actor Winston Reckert, who will receive the Sam Payne Lifetime Achievement Award.

The Same Payne Award, presented to professional performers, recognizes humanity, artistic integrity, and the encouragement of new talent. Wasserman, originally from New York City, moved to Vancouver in 1972 to teach English and Theatre at UBC, and became a strong figure on the acting scene, performing on stage as well as in television and film. He is also the editor of the anthology Modern Canadian Plays.

Vancouver-born Reckert is perhaps most widely recognized for his role in the 1990s television show Neon Rider. Over the course of his acting career he has received three Canadian Film Awards Best Actor nominations, and the Festival of Festival’s Critic’s Choice Award.

The awards ceremony will take place April 27 at 12:45 p.m., at the Sun Sui Wah Restaurant.
