Juno nods for Vancouver's Jocelyn Morlock, musica intima, VSO
Vancouver’s musica intima, composer Jocelyn Morlock, and the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra are among the nominees for the 2011 Juno Awards.
Vocal ensemble musica intima’s recording into light, the group’s fifth release, scored a nomination for Classical Album of the Year: Vocal or Choral. The recording features Morlock’s piece “Exaudi”, a work nominated for Classical Composition of the Year. This brings musica intima’s Juno nomination count up to three; the ensemble’s self-titled debut album received a Juno nod—but did not take home the prize—in 1999.
The VSO’s recording Chopin: Piano Concertos, a collaboration with Canadian-born pianist Janina Fialkowska, is nominated for Classical Album of the Year: Large Ensemble or Soloist(s) with Large Ensemble Accompaniment. The album features a live recording of Frederick Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 2 in F minor, Op. 21 and Piano Concerto No. 1 in E minor, Op. 11, under the baton of VSO artistic director Bramwell Tovey.
This marks the fifth Juno nomination for the ensemble, which took home both a Juno and a Grammy in 2008 for its recording of concertos by Samuel Barber, Erich Wolfgang Korngold, and William Walton, performed by Canadian violinist James Ehnes.
The 40th Annual Juno Awards take place March 27 in Toronto.
