The three-day Telus TaiwanFest got off to a roaring start in downtown Vancouver today, with huge crowds gathering around numerous food stalls along Granville Street.

The largest number of outlets iss in the 800 block just south of Smithe Street. But the longest lineups were outside the huge tent in the 700 block of Granville, where celebrated Taiwanese chef Tim Teng is overseeing the preparation of hundreds of meals.

Teng, who was Taiwan's top chef in 2008 and 2010, is one of the star attractions at the festival.

His specialty is stew, which was being gobbled up in huge quantities this afternoon.

The 600 block of Granville Street features a garden display by the Tzu Chi Foundation Canada, which is a Buddhist charity offering assistance in more than 70 countries.

The foundation has also arranged for 60 practitioners of traditional Chinese medicine to offer free consultations between noon and 6 p.m. for all three days of the Festival, which winds up on Monday (September 3).

Below you can see some snapshots of what was going on along Granville Street today.
