Vancouver Fringe Festival review: Phone Whore makes a tough and tender defence of fantasies

    1 of 1 2 of 1

Sex. Compassion. Intelligence. What’s not to like? In Cameryn Moore’s solo show, we get to hang out with her at her other job, where she’s a phone-sex worker. Laughs come from absurdity—as Moore describes the 32”-double-H breasts her caller wants her to have, for instance. But she isn’t here to ridicule her clients. Asking why so many supposedly straight male callers want to be fucked by big black cock, her answer is as witty as it is understanding: these guys aren’t so much closeted, she says, as living in locked, unlit basements filled with cobwebs and feral cats. Fantasies about incest and especially pedophilia raise questions about the relationship between mentally rehearsing behaviours and indulging them. But, as Moore points out, fantasies aren’t crimes, and she is perfectly tough, tender, and poised in her defence of them.
