Vancouver council is set to approve $375,000 in Community and Neighbourhood Arts Development Grants to 56 organizations Tuesday (May 1), but some organizations will be facing disappointment.
In a report, staff noted that there was a 45-percent increase in applications this year, with 71 applications requesting a total of $643,299—almost double the available budget of $375,000.
Few of the grants being recommended by staff for approval are for the full amount requested, but the International Arts Initiatives Association’s request for $15,000 is being rubber-stamped in full, making it the largest single grant of the bunch.
Other large grants are set to go to the Car Free Vancouver Society (who requested $25,000 but will receive $12,500); the Still Moon Arts Society (who will receive the full $12,500 it requested) the Eastside Culture Crawl Society (who will received the full $10,000 it requested); and the Vancouver Pride Society (who will receive the full amount it requested: $10,000 in cash, and an addition $10,000 service grant from the city).
Unlucky organizations turned down for grants include the Balcone Art Society, which requested $13,500; Immigrant Services Society of B.C., which requested $10,000; and the Vancouver Israel Folk Dance Society, which requested $10,000—among others.
