VSO launches new chamber-music series in 120-seat theatre
The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra is getting up close and personal.
The company is set to launch a new three-concert series of chamber music.
Tbe Industrial Alliance VSO Chamber Players series kicks off on November and 18 in the 120-seat Pyatt Hall, at the VSO School of Music, allowing the audience to listen to the musicians in a much more intimate space than the usual Orpheum Theatre.
The VSO School of Music will also be offering a lecture/demonstration series called the Artists' Corner, which will take place in Pyatt Hall a day before the first concert of each program. There, VSO Concertmaster Dale Barltrop will lead a discussion on one of the pieces, and will be joined by his colleagues for a "play and talk" style exploration of some of the repertoire.
The first show finds the VSO players performing chamber music by Handel, Schumann, and Prokofiev, as well as a rare performance of music by Baroque composer Jean-Marie Leclair.
The other two concerts in the series happen in March and May of 2013.

The great power of chamber music lies in its intimate discourse, the close-up. This repertoire allows listeners direct access, a personal connection to the breath and pulse of music.
Spectacle has its place. So do the small forms. It is what our company does in chamber opera. It is what Europe has done for centuries.
For years VISI, the Vancouver Recital Society, the Friends of Chamber Music, the Early Music Society, the Pacific Baroque Orchestra -- and many more -- have offered these avenues. Today, the Symphony offers its own artists, and its own imprimatur. This is very good news.
Congratulations, friends.
