27th annual Vancouver International Jazz Festival announces more 2012 concerts

      After announcing the lineup for the Marquee and Vogue Series last month, the 27th annual TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival had added even more artist s to its 2012 program. The annual music festival takes place at various Vancouver venues from June 22 to July 1, and tickets to the following concerts go on sale Saturday (March 10) at 10 a.m.

      Trombone Shorty returns to the VIJF stage after mesmerizing audiences last year. The 26-year-old New Orleans singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist shares a double bill with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band—another treat from the French Quarter—at the Centre for Performing Arts (777 Homer Street) on June 22 at 8 p.m.

      On the same night, The Cookers with George Cables, Billy Harper, Billy Hart, Cecil McBee, Eddie Henderson, Craig Handy, and David Weiss will play from their swingy debut album, Warriors, to Performance Works (1218 Cartwright Street) at Granville Island for two sets, at 7:30 p.m. and 10 p.m.

      Brazilian-born, New York-based pianist and singer Elaine Elias brings a sensual musical style that combines her Brazilian roots to jazz, pop, and bossa nova rhythms with the Eliane Elias Brasileira Quartet at Performance Works on June 24 at 7:30 p.m. and 10 p.m. The following night, Scandinavian singer Eivør takes the same stage with a performance at 7:30 p.m., while B.C.-raised, Paris-based Ndidi O and special guests Copilots play Venue (881 Granville Street) at 9 p.m.

      Norwegian guitarist Terje Rypdal blends jazz, rock, and contemporary classical guitar in “Crime Scene”, featuring Palle Mikkelborg, Ståle Storløkken, Paolo Vinaccia, and Bergen Big Band, at Performance Works on June 26 at 7:30 p.m.; while Juno-nominated Kyprios and The Chaperones with special guest SonReal play Venue at 9 p.m.

      Balkan Beat Box, which blends Arabic, Mediterranean, and Balkan music with dancehall performs with special guest Geoff Berner at the Vogue Theatre (918 Granville Street) on June 27 at 9 p.m. Across Granville Street at Venue, The Sway Machinery with special guests BADBADNOTGOOD bring their hard-hitting funk to Vancouver with a performance at 9 p.m.

      If you’ve never heard “British jazz”, check out Get the Blessing with special guests The SSRIs at Venue on June 28 at 9 p.m. On June 29, Grammy Award-winning trumpet player Terrell Stafford and his quintet take the stage at Performance Works at 7:30 p.m. Then, Canadian chanteuse Jill Barber let her sultry vocals glide over her five-piece band with a performance at Performance Works on June 30 at 7:30 p.m. and 10 p.m.
