Discounts on foods. Chances to win tickets. And an opportunity to win a spot on the team’s charter flight on an upcoming road trip.

Those are the types of initiatives the Canucks have unveiled in an attempt to show fans that they were missed during the 113-day long National Hockey League lockout.

In a news released issued this morning, the Canucks have announced they will celebrate fan loyalty during opening weekend January 19 and 20 when the team hosts Anaheim and Edmonton. The Canucks will give select fans the jerseys off their backs following the season-opener against the Ducks.

One long-time season ticket holder will be chosen to drop a ceremonial puck at centre ice prior to the game to start the season.

The team has also announced that during the season-opening three-game homestand, all merchandise in the team store will be discounted by 50 percent. During these games, concession-stand hot dogs, popcorn, nachos and soft drinks will all be priced at $1.

The Canucks say they will be holding draws for game tickets, jerseys, and nights in a Rogers Arena suite for fans attending the opening weekend. As well, one fan will be chosen to take part in a $100,000 shootout during the first game of the season.

The Canucks have also announced that the opening night 50/50 draw, which supports the Canucks For Kids fund, will start with a $70,000 carry-over of unclaimed money from last season. Tickets for January games go on sale at 2 p.m. on Tuesday (January 15).

Nope. An across-the-board 50% reduction in the cost of individual tickets is the place to start. Put bums in seats or go away, million(billion)aires.

$1 dollar hot dogs and cheaper jerseys are "cute", but they mean nothing to the real hockey fan. Free hot dogs and jerseys would make more sense.

As for the 50/50, that is truly lame. The Canucks should just kick in the other 50% and write a cheque to charities for $150,000 - period. They can start over after that.
