David Gunawan is leaving his post at Wildebeest (120 West Hastings Street) and Wesley Young will take over the role of executive chef at the Gastown restaurant starting February 1.

Gunawan, who has cooked at Vancouver’s West restaurant and Belgium’s Michelin-starred In De Wulf, will be a partner at Che Baba Cantina and Yoga Studio (603 Kingsway), an East Vancouver restaurant with a menu inspired by Mediterranean and French flavours.

“It has definitely been an amazing journey opening Wildebeest and working with such a talented group of chefs,” Gunawan stated in a news release on January 15. “I leave the restaurant in good hands with Wesley and look forward to visiting and enjoying the food as a guest in the future.”

Chef Young, who has worked at Wildebeest since it opened in August 2012, previously cooked at West and C restaurant in Vancouver, 357c in Montreal, and Tom Aikens in London.

Wow. Chez Baba is already good. Wildebeest had some amazing, weird, delicious menu items.
