In May 2008, a group of filmmakers recorded an amazing and terrifying spectacle at the Ilulissat Glacier in Western Greenland.

During the glacial calving event, which lasted more than an hour, massive walls of ice towering hundreds of feet into the air broke away and tumbled into the water.

The calving event, described as the largest of its kind ever caught on film, is featured in the award-winning film “Chasing Ice”.

Check out this clip to get a sense of the massive scale of these ice formations and the incredible forces unleashed when they collapse. And read an interview with director Jeff Orlowski here.
