SPARK FX '13 explores world of visual effects in film

Whether you work in the industry or are simply an admirer, Spark FX '13 has something for anyone interested in the world of visual effects. It kicks off Wednesday (January 30) and runs until February 3 at Vancity Theatre (1181 Seymour Street).

SPARK FX is actually composed of two main elements: a film festival and a conference.

There's a film festival that will screen classics like 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Thing, and The Exorcist. There are also several offerings from Europe, including Jean-Pierre Jeunet's Micmacs, Luc Besson's The Extraordinary Adventures of Adele Blanc-sec, and Fritz Lang's two-part, five-hour Die Niebelungen.

If you haven't seen Wagner's Dream yet, now's a good time to catch it. The documentary, which screened at last year's Vancouver International Film Festival, chronicles Canada's Robert Lepage's in his attempt to stage the Richard Wagner's Ring cycle utilizing a visually stunning, sculptural 90,000-pound stage set.

Lepage also produced and costars in Mars et Avril (which previously played at the Whistler Film Festival), a sci-fi love story set in a future Montreal.

There's also a conference, featuring international and local speakers, panel discussions, and special presentations that include discussing the visual effects in blockbusters like The Hobbit, Prometheus, and The Life of Pi.

And if you're seeking employment, you're in luck: there's also a two-day job fair.
