Local publisher Greystone Books gets new lease on life

As the publishing business continues to swirl in the wake of the digital tsunami, news that isn’t disorienting or demoralizing can seem rare.

The recent troubles of long-standing Vancouver publishing flagship Douglas & McIntyre were merely the latest. So it comes as a welcome turn for the local industry that a major D&M imprint, Greystone Books, has been acquired by Victoria-based Heritage House Publishing.

Heritage House is bringing Greystone’s assets aboard, including all titles contracted or published by the imprint, as part of its roster of publishing programs, which also boasts TouchWood Editions and Rocky Mountain Books.

In an announcement made today, the Association of Book Publishers of B.C. applauds the January 31 acquisition.

“Greystone Books has published some very important Canadian books over the years,” says ABPBC president Robert Ballantyne in a media release. “The publishing community is thrilled that Greystone has come to an arrangement with Heritage House Publishing that will allow them both to continue producing quality books and to remain in British Columbia.”

Greystone Books was established in 1993. Its new incarnation, Greystone Books Ltd., will function as a separate company based in Vancouver. Greystone’s founding publisher, Rob Sanders, will become a significant shareholder in the company. He’ll also resume his role as publisher, which he held from 1993 until last year.

Greystone has recently published works by such authors as David Suzuki, Charlotte Gill, and Candace Savage.
